Richmond supporters are the most financially conservative AFL fans - much like Richmond are one of the most careful teams with their defence on the field – according to a new survey conducted by ME.

That was the key finding from a light-hearted AFL finals survey which found an amusing connection between financial etiquette and the footy team you support.

Conducted post-qualifying finals, with 6 teams remaining, Richmond was shown to rate the highest overall on money behaviours that some may call conservative or savvy, and others may term ‘stingy’.

For example, Richmond supporters are 21% less likely to shout you a drink at the pub than Brisbane who is the most likely to shout.

Richmond supporters are also 13% more likely to tally up the bill after a meal and only pay for what they consumed, rather than being open to splitting the bill evenly among friends.

Additionally, Richmond supporter’s aren’t inclined to put on a gourmet spread at a BBQ; Collingwood supporters are the most likely to serve you up gourmet sausages, while Richmond and Brisbane are 16% more likely to opt for home brand snags.

ME money expert Matt Read said “Inspired by the rivalry between footy teams, we pitted the finals teams against each other and found the AFL team you support says something about how you interpret the social rules of money.”

“In footy, there are situations where people don’t always play by the rules. Likewise, it’s clear from the results that not all supporters play by the social rules of money in certain social interactions.”

Respondents rated the degree in which they identified with the money behaviours listed below, from 0 (don’t identify at all) to 10 (completely identify).

Editor notes: ME’s AFL survey was conducted in September 2019 with 600 (100 supporters per team) Australians over 18 years of age who barrack for one of the 6 finals footy teams, with fieldwork conducted by Pureprofile.
